Myths and Facts about Braces

Let's set the record straight.   There are some misconceptions about orthodontics that leave many patients confused.

Myth #1: Braces are for kids.

Fact: Braces are not only for kids.  In fact, 1 out of 5 orthodontic patients is an adult.  It's never too late to have a beautiful smile!

Myth #2: Orthodontists are only needed for super complex and challenging cases.

Fact: Orthodontists have gone through many years of specialized schooling that helps them properly recognize the difference between complex and simple cases.  Simple cases can turn into complex cases if not properly treated.  An orthodontic specialist is the smart choice for your orthodontic needs.

Myth #3: My family dentist can straighten my teeth just as well as an orthodontist.

Fact: Orthodontists receive much more specialized training than dentists.  Orthodontists must become dentists first and after 4 years of dental school  they then complete an additional 3 years of training in an orthodontic residency program.  Orthodontists are held to a much higher standard especially if they are board certified.  Orthodontists only practice orthodontics and treat hundreds of patients a year.  They have an extensive, specialized knowledge of a full range of orthodontic treatment.  Ask your family dentist what their credentials are and ask yourself whether or not your feel comfortable having a non-specialist straighten your or your child's teeth.

Myth #4: It is more expensive to have your teeth straightened by an orthodontist than a general dentist.

Fact: Not necessarily.  Each dental professional—whether or not they are a dentist or orthodontist—sets his or her own fee structure.  The value in seeing an orthodontist over a general dentist is partially found in the extra education, expertise, and experience that most orthodontists possess.
